I am offering up for sale my 32 Inch Rigid Heddle loom. This loom is in excellent condition. It's a great loom for weaving blankets and shawls. Over the past year I have been cutting back on my weaving. I have two smaller looms that currently meet my weaving needs and would like to find a nice home for this loom.

Hi blog and fiber buddies. After a good bit of thought I have decided to close down my Etsy shop.

I love Etsy. It's a wonderful online shopping site for the handcrafted items. In the last couple of years I have felt that Etsy has become saturated with fiber art shops. Long Time No Blog

Hi Folks,
It has been such a long time since I last posted on my blog that I had forgotten how to post. lol
Part of me wants to continue blogging sporadically and part wants to stop all together. It seems Facebook and Google+ are to blame. It is just so much easier to keep up with friends and family on those two sites.
Most of my blog buddies and fiber friends are on those two sites so we have been keeping up with each other via those two sites.
I do have a few things to update on my blog. One is that I am happy to report the Elizabeth 2 had sold and is now living in Pennsylvania. I hope the new owner enjoys her as much as I did.
The other is that I have been doing a good bit of indigo dyeing as seen from my header picture. I will be following up with another post on the Indigo Dyeing.
One more thing. I have been involved in the Spin A Pound Get A Pound group on Facebook. It's a bartering group for spinners, dyers, processors of fiber and sheep and alpaca farmers. I have managed to acquire a good bit of alpaca fiber with this barter system and as my friend Jody of Gypspinner pointed out spinning for someone else can certainly improve your spinning skills. If you are on Facebook and are interested in spinning for others in order to increase you fiber stash check out the group. I understand there is also a similar group on Ravelry.

For Sale: Ashford Elizabeth 2 Spinning Wheel + Extras

I decided to sell my Elizabeth 2. I originally listed her for sale and then changed my mind. This time she is definitely for sale. She is in excellent, like new condition. I have owned her for a little over two years.

I love her but do not use her enough. I would love to find a new home for her. I currently own a Majacraft Rose that is more suitable for my needs. The Elizabeth is just too large to haul to spin groups.

She comes with seven bobbins and a vertical Lazy Kate.

I am also including the double treadle kit. I purchased and converted the Elizabeth 2 to a double treadle wheel. After approx. a month or so I decided that I prefer spinning the wheel as a single treadle and switched back to single treadle..

The Elizabeth 2 is a double drive/Scotch Tension, single treadle wheel.
Her spinning ratios are: 8.5, 11 and 15. The 24 inch drive wheel is mounted on ball bearings for effortless spinning.
I can’t really tell you much about the double drive as I have only spun in the Scotch Tension mode.
She weighs approx. 20 pounds and has a clear lacquer finish.
This price includes the Elizabeth 2 Spinning Wheel , double treadle kit for the Elizabeth 2, seven bobbins and one unfinished vertical lazy kate.

A Visit To The Yarn Barn.

I recently visited the Yarn Barn of Lawrence, Ks. I wanted to share my pictures of the visit with you.

The Yarn Barn is a wonderful source for spinners, weavers, knitters and fiber artists. You'll find a large variety of warp yarns, knitting yarns, spinning fibers, various looms and spinning wheels,felting tools, dyes and so much more. They have great service both at the store front and online. Several years ago I ordered one of my wheels from them. It arrived promptly and in excellent condition.

During my visit one of the owners was kind enough to instruct me on the use of double drive spinning on my Elizabeth 2 wheel. I love Ashford products but unfortunately they aren't the best as far as supplying directions and instruction manuals .

I hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed my visit.

A Most Awesome Book

The long awaited Fleece & Fiber Source Book by Deborah Robson & Carol Ekarius arrived yesterday. Several months ago when I heard that it was in the making I knew this would be a book that I would want to add to my fiber library. Over the past year I have been deliberately not buying books unless they were available on Kindle. In my continuing effort to downsize and destash I made it a goal to Help save tress, add less clutter by buying e-books. With this book I had to bend the rules and make an exception. It was well worth it.
First off, this book is huge. It has 438 beautiful, semi-glossy, color pages. Loaded with beautiful photography. The first section is devoted to sheep breeds. I did not realize there are so many breeds. The sheep breeds section is broken down by subgroups; Blackfaced Mountain Family, Cheviot Family, Dorset Group, Down Family, English Longwool Family(my favorite), Feral Group, Merino Family, Northern European Short-Tailed Family, Welsh Hill and Mountain Family, Other Sheep Breeds and Wider Circles of Sheep.
The second section is devoted to the other fiber producing animals; Goats, The Goat Crosses, Camelids, and Other Critters (bison, musk ox, rabbit, yak).
If you are a fiber artist I recommend this book. If you are a spinner I highly recommend this book. A friend of mine said of this book "it makes me want to spin all the different fibers" I agree. I admit there are sheep breeds in this book that I have never heard of before; The Lonk, Gulf Coast Native, Debouillet, East Friesian, Gromark just to name a few. One interesting point in the book is the difference between Blackfaced, Blackface, and Black Face. The authors take each breed and give a description, interesting facts about the breed, staple length, fiber diameters, lock characteristic, natural colors. Also, information on dyeing, fiber preparation, spinning tips, knitting, crocheting, and weaving of the particular breed.
If you are like me and you love fiber and spinning you will love this book.
This will be a great reference book for spinners for years to come.

My Little Woven Bag

I am so excited to post about this little bag. I have wanted to make one for a very long time. The tutorial can be found on Doni's Delis Handwoven blog. Because I am a visual learner I just couldn't figure out how to make this from looking at the drawings and reading the directions. I had an "ah ha" moment and decided to post a question on the Ravelry Rigid Heddle group for help in deciphering the directions. Well, apparently I'm not the only one out there with this same problem . Several folks agreed with my plea for further explanation. One very kind person immediately went to work on making a youtube video on assembly of the Doni's Deli bag. What a great video.

I made this bag using one of my very first and slightly less than perfect handspun, handwoven scarves. The selvages were really uneven and I was actually a bit embarrassed to wear it as a scarf. Sewing it into a bag hides those uneven selvages. ;)

I think this will make the perfect spindle bag or small knitting project bag.

My next project will be to figure out how to make a lining for these bags. Wish me luck.

Shop Update, A WIP, And A Little Spinning

The last couple of days have been very busy in the Wool Room. I finished weaving a couple of scarves (on separate looms). Spun and plied some "Art Yarn", cabbage dyed some yarn. Yes, I said cabbage dyed. I have warped and started weaving a new scarf. Not to mention a little bit of knitting. I also decided to go through my fiber supply and really think about the fibers that I wanted to spin for myself and the fibers that I wanted to spin and list on Etsy. My goal for the next two weeks is to spin up all of the Etsy fibers into yarns and list them. I have a feeling I will need a fiber break after that. Wouldn't you?

Do you have days when you just don't want to spin, knit or weave but you just can't help yourself.

I don't think that I could go a full day without some type of yarn or fiber in my hands. When I travel I can easily go a full day without fiber. I'll have to try that one day when I'm at home. Hmm.

Here is my latest Etsy listing. I'm not a fan of purple but I really like this scarf. The warp is a dark blue linen and cotton blend yarn. The weft is raw blue and purple silk and wool bend yarn. When I first removed it from the loom it was a bit stiff. This was my first weaving with linen. I wasn't sure what to expect. I wet/dry finished it a couple of times and with each finishing it softened.

The handspun yarn was a fun project. The fiber came from my friend Beth of Whorling Tides. It's a blend of numerous fibers and green colors. I spun and double plied this yarn in a worsted-aran weight.

This is a scarf that I wove using Koigu yarn as the warp and my handspun Merino fiber as the weft. This was a joy to weave. I loved the way the browns and blues blended together.

I took time out from the spinning and weaving to do a little red cabbage dying per the Spin Off magazine article. I cut up red/purple cabbage added water and a small hank of undyed yarn. Set it in the sun for some solar dying. It stayed outside for about three days. If you can get beyond the stench you'll love this method of dying. ;) The yarn turned out to be a lovely shade of Mauve. The stench came out after several washings.

Lastly, one more Etsy listing. This is a teal and blue handwoven scarf. The warp is a 50/50 blend of cotton and silk. The weft is 100% handspun Corriedale yarn.

This is a picture of the "All Black Shawl" that I was commissioned to weave. I hope the new owner likes it. I decided that I like it so much I have ordered yarn to weave one for moi. The warp is 50/50 silk/wool blend. The weft is 100% Suri Alpaca. Even thought it is light weight I have no doubt that it will be very warm.

I hope to finish this project within the next few days. It's a cotton warp with a Himalayan Silk weft. When finished, this scarf will go to Etsy. I love weaving with the Himalayan Silk yarns. The yarns have so much texture and color.

I recently finished my very first pair of knitted fingerless mitts. I was inspired to knit a pair after my good friend/blogger buddy Jody/Gypsyspinner gifted me with a pair of fingerless gloves she had knitted from her handspun alpaca yarn. I started using a freebie pattern that came with the Mountain Colors Twizzle yarn that I chose for the mitts. I thought the pattern stitch was a bit complicated so I decided for my first mitt I should go with something simple. I followed the cast on from the pattern, ribbed the cuff and then I knitted the rest of the mitts in stockinette stitch instead of the Sailor Rib that was called for in the pattern. Here is a link to the original pattern. Check out their other free patterns while you are there. I love Mountain Colors. Their yarns are beautiful and they have such a wide variety of colors and fibers .

Here is the ball of Twizzle Yarn rolled into a center pull ball and ready for knitting. It the Blue-Green colorway. Although, the label says blue-green I really don't see any green. Which is fine with me since my favorite color is blue. It's a wool yarn that has been plied with silk. This yarn was such a delight to work with. No splitting, no knots and very soft.

I have started the ribbed cuff and am moving right along. As I said earlier I revised the pattern a bit and switched to stockinette stitch right after I finished the ribbed cuff.

When I knit socks I always cast on two sets of needles so that I can work both socks at the same time to avoid second sock syndrome. I did the same with the mitts. That way I wouldn't have second mitt syndrome.

Here I am removing the waste yarn in order to pick up stitches for the thumb. This was the most troubling part of the project. Since it was my first pair of mitts I had no idea how to do this and didn't have anyone nearby to show me. Jodi I wish we lived closer together. I am a visual learner and need to see things in action. You know what that means. YOUTUBE! I love youtube.com. I have learned so many knitting, spinning and weaving techniques from youtube videos.

I was lucky enough to find a video that explained this part of the project perfectly. I also found this video helpful as well.

Finished!! I love the mitts and will be casting on for another pair very soon. This time I think I will use some of my handspun yarn.

Return To Nina

In a previous blog post I wrote about my visit to Fiber Art Work. A studio that had just recently been opened by my friend Nina. Well, a return visit has been in the works. Yesterday was the day. Nina has been dyeing up a storm since my last visit. She surprised me with so many vivid, bold and beautiful dyed yarns.

Spindle Stand

I have had numerous folks from Ravelry and Facebook inquiring about my spindle stand. So, I thought I would take several pictures and add a few dimensions so that hopefully folks can make their own.

I purchased this Spindle stand from a thrift store a few years ago. I was told that it is a Country Pine Magazine Ladder. I just new it would be perfect for my spindles. I have continued to keep my eye out for a similiar stand but no such luck. I have even searched the internet and have not found another similiar stand.

I'm sure there are some woodworkers out there who could easily make these stands.

When I brought my stand home I immediately drilled holes across the top for more spindle storage.
The band across the top is 14 3/4 inches L., 2 inches wide and 3/4 inches deep.

The height of the entire stand is 24 inches. The base is 11 inches wide.

The width of the base is 11 inches. The length of the base is 14 inches.

Hope this helps. If anyone does find something similiar to this online please let me know so that I can pass the website along to others. Thank you.

In The Pink

If you don't like pink then you might want to skip this blog posting. It's full of pink. ;)

My friend Nina, of Fiber Art Work called me the other day and said that she wanted to dye some yarn for me to knit a shawl for my sister. What a wonderful, and kind gesture. Thank you, Nina. I told her that my sister's favorite color is pink. So Nina went to work with the dyes.

This is the result of Nina's dying. Have you ever seen such lovely shades of pink?

I started knitting and as most of you know I am a notoriously slow knitter. I thought to myself "I will never get this shawl finished this year" DH kept suggesting that I weave it knowing how much I love weaving and how much faster I am at weaving than knitting.

I decided to use Pink Lambs Pride and Artful Yarns Portrait - Weeping Woman Mohair yarn as the weft.
And Nina's yarn as the warp. I ripped out the knitting and started warping the loom.

You know how you get the gut feeling about certain projects being just right and others not so . Well, I immediately felt that this project with these yarns was just right. I wove the shawl on my Ashford 20 inch Knitters Loom using a 7.5 dent heddle.

I love the way the multi colored mohair looks with Nina's yarn.

Here it is, all finished but the fringe twisting.

The shawl is 19 inches wide, 82 inches long with 2.5 inches of twisted fringe.

All finished. I hope my sister likes it. I think she will since it's her favorite color. Thanks again, Nina.

Hold On To Your Seats

I finished a knitted project !!!!! Yeah!!! It's a scarf cowl. This lovely, yarn was gifted to me by my friend Cissy and with out a doubt it's some of the most beautiful, soft yarn that I have ever knitted . The fact that it is in my favorite color of blue doesn't hurt either.

It's a lovely, soft blend of 80% Merino, 10% Cashmere, 10% Nylon.

I knitted this extra long scarf in the stockinette stitch. It's 6 inches wide and 115 inches long. Told you it was extra long. I then joined the two ends together to form a giant circle which will be looped/wrapped around my neck several times to make a cowl.

Nina loves knitting, spinning, fiber dyeing and now she has her very own studio where she can spend her time following her dreams. Fiber Art Work, Nina's new studio is located at 3004 Governors Dr., Huntsville, AL . Her studio hours are Mon - Sat 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. Nina's studio of fiber adventures will include yarn dyeing, fabric painting, machine knitting and sock machine knitting, applique with Stable Magic. Also a cozy stitching area to gather and have a great time. It's a relaxing, see what your friends are working on kind of place. A place to share fiber art information with like minded fiber artists.

Nina's husband created a ventilation system in the dye room so the building would be fume free.

Weaving Storage Tip

Every once in a Blue Moon my brain kicks in gear and actually has a useful idea.
I have a bit of a clutter problem in my Wool Room. I'm finding it difficult to find storage space for my long heddles and shuttles. I lean them on the wall and they have a tendency to fall over. Well, today I was looking through the sales ads and the local Target store has it's Christmas items on sale. I noticed the Christmas Decorations storage containers were included in that sale. I gave special attention to the Holiday Gift Wrap roll container and thought that it would be perfect for my storage problem.
I have seen the heddle/reed racks sold at fiber shops. Don't get me wrong, I would love one of those but at $100+ I would much rather spend that money on fiber, yarn or some great Kindle e-books. My little container was less than $8.00.

I just finished weaving this extra long scarf on my 12 Inch Ashford Knitters Loom.
For the Warp I used my own handyed and handspun Optim Merino yarn and the weft is Adirondack Petite Silk Noir Yarn. The Petite Noir yarn is extremely thin, and kept breaking, so I wound it into two center pull balls and then plied them together. I wove this scarf loosely using a 7.5 dent heddle.
This will make a nice weight scarf for our warmer Alabama winters.

Here is a picture of the Dish Cloth shawl that I mentioned in the previous post. I have woven the icord into the eyelets and decided to leave it long enough to use as a tie so that the wearer would be able to keep the shawl closed.

Icord Everywhere

I recently found this wonderful little gadget for making icord. It is so much fun and is a great time saver compared to knitting icord with dpns or the little round knitting spool. This little gadget can crank out the icord in a matter of minutes. It's the Bond Embellish-Knit Automatic Spool Knitter. I plan to use the icords to embellish my triangular knitted "Dish Cloth Shawls". I sometimes think that even though the Dishcloth Shawl is an easy and quick knit pattern it can be rather plain looking. The icord woven over and under through the shawl eyelets will add the perfect touch.

I found the YouTube video very helpful in learning how to use this little gadget. It's much better than the instructions that were included in the package.

Once my shawl has completed drying I will post pictures.

A Little Weaving

I just finished weaving a Recycled Sari Silk scarf. My warp is Classic Elite - Classic Silk. Classic Silk is a blend of 50/50 Cotton, Silk. The weft is Recycled Sari Silk yarn. I found that the Sari Silk Yarn has too much twist in it for my tastes so I ran it back through my spinning wheel to "untwist" a bit and give the yarn a softer feel. I really enjoyed weaving with the Sari Silk it adds beautiful bursts of jewel tone colors and textures to my scarf. This should be comfortable to wear in Alabama's climate. Sometimes a wool scarf is just too much. My scarf is 6 inches wide and 88 inches long with a 1.5 inch fringe. I wanted to have enough length to do a double wrap with the scarf.

I love the bold reds in this yarn.

A Little Spinning

I recently finished spinning Hoobody Hand Dyed Fiber, Colorway Sakura, 100% superwash Merino.

As you can see it has lots of vibrant pinks and greens sort of a "Lily" color. I think this would knit into a really warm scarf.

Gamp Color Study.

I finally finished my Gamp Color Study. It has taken almost two months of weaving to complete this project. At the time of weaving I wasn't particularly happy with the project because I chose to weave on my 32 inch rigid heddle loom. Why you ask? Well, I have very short arms and weaving on a 32 inch loom can be a bit of a stretch for me. I am happy with the colorful outcome, and would consider weaving another color study in the future.

I did enjoy watching the interaction of the colors as the weaving progressed. When finished I added a twisted 2 inch fringe and slightly wet/dry felted the project. I wanted to close all the "little holes"

I used the Cascade 220 Wool yarns for both the warp and weft. I'm not really sure what I will do with the finished project. I might hang it on the wall in my "wool room" or use it as a small blanket.

Meet The New Little Weaving Loom

I found this little cutie while visiting the Smoky Mountain Spinnery in Gatlinburg a few weeks ago. It's the Hazel Rose 12 inch Square Loom. These looms come in all sizes and shapes. I bought this one specifically for weaving cotton dish cloths. I love the hand knitted dish cloths but weaving them on this little loom is so much faster and easier. It uses less than 1 ball of Lily's Sugar'n Cream cotton yarn. The finished product shrinks to a nine inch square cloth. Perfect.

Current Happenings - Weaving

I have neglected this blog far too long. It's time to show you what I have been up to.

First off. I just removed a shawl from my 24 inch rigid heddle loom and am currently working on twisting and trimming the fringe. Just a little FYI. Fringe Twisters are wonderful gadgets that help with this little chore. This shawl is another one of my Kitchen Sink shawls. That's right it has everything thing in it but the kitchen sink. My warp is a variety of fibers; silk, cotton mohair, wool, and alpaca. My weft is pretty much the same thing except I have added some handspfun BFL. I'll post more pictures once I complete the fringe and wet/dry finish the shawl. I'm hoping the wool yarns will bloom a bit and fill in the spaces as it is a bit of an open weave.
Next I have warped and started weaving on my Color Gamp Study. I used Cascade 220 yarns for both the warp and weft. I'm a bit unhappy with my selvages as they are a bit uneven.

I do plan to lightly felt this when I am finished. Hopefully that will hide the uneven selvages.

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't been adding as many items to my Etsy shop lately. Well I have been selling my handwoven items privately and hope to continue. I will continue to add batt listings to Etsy from time to time but not as often as in the past.

The Church that I attend has started a Prayer Shawl Ministry in which I participate . We will be crocheting, knitting or weaving shawls for those in need of comfort and solace. Here is a link to the Prayer Shawl Ministry home page for those interested in creating a Ministry in your own Church

Summer Fun and Planning

Hope everyone is having a pleasant and not too hot summer. It has been miserably hot here in Alabama. I find myself wishing to move to a cooler area, possibly the North Pole ;)
I just wanted to give you a little peak at my current projects. I recently purchased two rigid heddle looms. One is an Ashford 24 inch RH Loom and the other is a Schacht Cricket RH 10 Inch Loom.
I hope to have enough scarves woven by the end of July to list them in my Etsy shop along with some Luscious Ditty Batts and handspun yarns. I have been thinking of leaning more toward undyed natural Ditty Batts composed of Alpaca, Silk, Merino and Blue Faced Leicester. So many of the Etsy shops stock the handyed batts and spinning fibers that I thought I would break away from the rest of the crowd. I love working with Alpaca, Silk, Merino and BFL. I find in the right combination they are very easy to spin and extremely soft. Once I become comfortable with weaving on the 24 inch loom I hope to even offer some handwoven shawls. Most of this is all still in the thinking stages and could change. I'll keep you posted.

Kentucky Fiber Festival 2010

We just returned from a great time at the Kentucky Sheep and Fiber Festival. It was the first fiber festival held in Lexington, Kentucky and what a great first time. There were over 62 vendors with loads of fiber, yarns, spinning wheels, spindles, needlefelting, fiber art gadgets and more.
The organizers of this event did a wonderful job. I am so looking forward to next year's fiber festival.

Comes with four bobbins, attached Lazy Kate, wooden handle orifice hook,

Poly stretch drive band. As you can see in the pictures it is a beautiful Colonial Upright wheel. I have taken very good care of this wheel. I used it mainly for plying as the bobbins are larger than the bobbins on my other wheels.

The wood is in lovely condition.

As with most Baynes it has a tendency to be a bit noisy and needs frequent oiling.

I have four wheels and have decided that it is time to destash.

Would love to sell this locally to avoid shipping.

A great big THANK YOU!! to everyone for entering the contest. I wish that I could send Luscious Ditty Batt samples to all who entered. Not only did this contest serve as a little PR for my Etsy shop but it also has given me insight as to your favorite colorways. It's seems that most of you like the Canyon 2010 and Peppermints/Raspberry Delight in the batt colorways. I have to admit a fondness for the Canyon 2010 and have been thinking of carding for moi. I do like experimenting with the same color but with different fibers. As a result of this contest you will probably see more of the Peppermint/Raspberry Delight and Canyon 2010 in my shop but with different fibers. I have been experimenting with Milk Protein fiber and with Falkand wool and am quiet happy with the results.
